About

My first computer was an Apple ][+ my parents got in the late 1970's. After hacking around in assembly for a few years, I took an AP Computer Science class in Pascal in 1983. My first exposure to Unix-like operating systems was using Pine on proprietary UNIX in the mid 1990's. I have been using Unix-like operating systems -- Linux and various BSDs -- as my primary home computer operating system since 2001 and am involved in the free and open source software community as a general user, advocate, hacker, and utility contributor. I am also a huge fan of the Grateful Dead, who I saw in concert 42 times, and have a nearly-complete archive of thousands of the Dead's live shows recorded over their 30+ year career. Phish comes in a close second for me, who I saw in concert over 30 times.

I am probably best known as the host of the Linux Reality podcast, which ran from February, 2006 through March, 2008 when it ended at Episode #100. The podcast enjoyed an extremely active audience and community. Although my Linux Reality podcasting days are over, I still appear on the virtual airwaves from time to time, either as an occasional host for Hacker Public Radio or a guest on The Linux Link Tech Show. In the meantime, all the archived LR episodes can be downloaded from the podcast's website.
There are several operating system projects to which I contribute, mostly in the form of providing patches, documentation, and maintaining packages. For example, I have submitted many bug reports and patches to FreeBSD and currently maintain a few ports in the FreeBSD ports tree. I also maintain one small package in the Debian main archive, and various SlackBuild scripts for Slackware which have been contributed to the SlackBuilds.org project.
I also write some code here and there, including sbopkg, a ports-style tool for Slackware and the SlackBuilds.org repository, the Acronym Plugin for the Textpattern CMS, and my custom user-contributed version of the great BashPodder -- a podcatcher client written in Bash. My version adds various functionality not found in the general release of BashPodder, and has proven to be quite popular.
